This was around my senior year in high school so probably the summer of 1993. My parents bought the 1974 Beetle for 1k. I loved that quirky little thing. I appreciated it’s simplicity and what it taught me about cars in general. You really respect all the modern bells and whistles when you have none (and for awhile I didn’t even have reverse!). I remember driving it in circles in the parking lot of my department store job to try to get the window to defrost enough to get on the road.
I traded it in a few years later when I started commuting to work, but in 1998 when I had the opportunity I purchased a brand new “New Beetle” (in blue) that I drove until moving to Washington in December of 2007. I can’t seem to go too long with out a beetle in my life because I purchased my current 1972 Beetle in 2010.
There’s just something about a beetle that makes me happy. Maybe it’s just a girl thing, but the niecelet asks which car I’m driving every time I pick her up from school because she hopes it’s the beetle. She loves tipping the wing windows so the air rushes over her face blowing her hair out in to a crazy mess while she giggles and grins. I can’t say I blame her 🙂
